SHRM's HR Management Certification Prep Courses offered by NIU Outreach provides human resource professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the six functional areas of human resource management as defined by the profession.

This award-winning program serves as a review/study course for those seeking Professional Human Resource (PHR) or Senior Professional Human Resource (SPHR) certification through the exam process administered by the Human Resources Certificate Institute (HRCI).

Online PHR and SPHR Certification Preparation Courses

NIU delivers the same great SHRM Human Resources Management Certification Preparation Course in a completely online format. There are two online course options. You can choose a course that includes scheduled online class meetings (10-Week Online Course) or a course that does not include these meetings (12-Week Independent Study or the 6-Week Independent Study course).

10-Week Synchronous Interactive Online Course

This course blends self-study learning activities with scheduled online class meetings using three tools.

Enhanced Independent Study Online Courses

This 8 week course is recommended only for those that are very self disciplined, have several years HR generalist experience (most likely SPHR candidates) and seeking a refresher or intensive review. There are no synchronous class meetings for this program but does provide access to a SPHR certified instructor for response to student questions. The course is designed for self paced study using two study tools.

The Enhanced Independent Study course gives you access to course content and instructors using two tools.

A shipping fee if applicable will be assessed upon registration.

Fees are inclusive of the SHRM Learning System® course materials, online resources and access to the NIU Blackboard Community. Students in 13 week evening courses will receive course materials at the first class meeting (Course Orientation). Participants registering within 5 days of class start may experience a brief delay in access to Blackboard online study resources due to processes required for assignment of user ID’s. Any late registrations requiring shipment of materials will be assessed a shipping fee. Any student requesting special circumstance advance shipment of books will also be assessed a shipping fee.

Registrants paying by check should fill out and send in the Mail/Fax Registration Form.

Payment Information

Course fee is payable at the time of registration. NIU will invoice companies for group registrations upon request and with approval of the corporate financial officer. The company Federal Employee Identification Number (FEIN), Purchase Order with complete billing address including name, phone number and e-mail address of the authorizing party is required at the time of registration. Companies requesting an invoice must register by phone (800) 345-9472.

Certain candidates may be eligible for funding for this program under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). All inquiries related to WIA funding for these programs must be initiated through your local WorkNet Center. The Illinois Veterans Grant and the Illinois National Guard Grant programs cover tuition and certain fees for eligible students. Charges for non-credit programs offered by NIU-Outreach are not based on university-wide tuition and fee calculations determined by the university and approved by its governing board. The Illinois Veterans Grant and Illinois National Guard Grant do not cover these charges.
